What Is Open Source Today?

Most of the major components in .NET Core 5 are open source. In particular, the following is a list of open source layers:

CoreCLR

ASP.NET Core 5

.NET Core 5 libraries

Runtime components

Compilers (see “The .NET Compiler Platform” section, later in this chapter)

WCF client

At the moment, the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) is not open source. The .NET Foundation (www.dotnetfoundation.org) is an organization created by Microsoft to foster open development and collaboration around the .NET development platforms. Visit its website to find a full list of open source projects managed by Microsoft, including the aforementioned .NET Core 5 components.
