Summary

Active Directory is a scalable directory service. However, if Active Directory is scaled, it needs to be done based on an organized plan and in conjunction with the business drivers of the organization. Domains, trees, and Forests can be segmented by business function, geographic distribution, or by administrative requirements. Whatever the driving force behind the segmentation, planning should always be the first step in the process. It is also critical for Active Directory to be leveraged for the right purpose. It makes an excellent repository for relatively static, limited-size data. It is not a good place to store rapidly changing or large blocks of data.
