Chapter 12. Structuring the Project: Phases of an Enterprise-wide E-Procurement Initiative

Objective

The way in which you structure your enterprise-wide e-procurement initiative will have a profound effect on the results. There are several key things to be considered:

  • It is important to set your e-procurement initiative within the company’s overall e-strategy.

  • Careful project planning and management, including coordinating the e-procurement initiative with other ongoing company initiatives, is essential.

  • It is important that you integrate an implications analysis that captures changes to business processes, job activities, and personnel policies directly into your implementation project.

  • Use well thought-out criteria when making your system selection.

Most companies by now have had some experience with large and complex IT or business restructuring initiatives, and will be familiar with the basic framework of enterprise-wide projects. However, there are some important aspects of the project approach—involving suppliers, building the business case, developing scoring criteria for software platform selection—that are unique to an e-procurement initiative.

There are distinct phases of an enterprise-wide project. Each is important, and none of them should be missed.

To begin with, let’s review the key phases of an enterprise-wide e-procurement project, shown in Figure 12.1.
