Summary and Conclusions

One process in IT we need to improve is that of software implementation. In the past we have been faced with horrendously complex software and are required to make it work quickly in large and sophisticated but equally complex IT architectures. Complexity on top of complexity. Any new approach such as autonomic computing that simplifies this should be welcomed by IT management and the software teams that are charged with implementation. The planning and introduction of autonomic computing must be given the same degree of care and attention as any other software implementation approach. The planning, testing, and, maybe, dual running of autonomic applications may be necessary. Autonomic computing must be implemented in a phased approach. The standard five levels leading to full automation cannot be gained quickly. Depending on the planning approach it might need several years to be fully successful. So plan the plan—and make a start.
