To the Land of Unicorns

In this chapter you’ve learned about some of the challenges facing our industry and what you, as a manager, can do about them.

Here’s what we’ve covered:

  • The pressing issue of diversity in the technology industry. We’ve looked at what it is, why it’s critically important, and what you can do to begin tackling the problem.

  • Flexible and remote working, which we’ll only see more of in the future. We’ve learned some ways in which you can better support remote workers and be ready for the shift that is already underway.

  • The importance of work-life balance, or in short, how to not let work take over your or your team’s lives. As a manager and leader you need to enforce this via your own actions rather than by rules.

  • Lastly, we touched upon culture. Fundamentally, you can make culture better by being yourself and doing an excellent job. It really is that simple. But not easy.

All of the subjects that we covered in this chapter have many excellent books written about them if you wish to dive deeper into any of them. Start with those that have been referenced and see where you go from there.

In the next chapter we’re going to be looking at the world of startups and considering how your newfound managerial skills could make an impact while accelerating your career.
