About the Research Team

Peter Begalla is conference chairman for Family Business magazine and Directors & Boards magazine; a consultant to multigenerational family enterprises; and a past lecturer in Family Business at Stetson University. As conference chairman, he brings together multigenerational family enterprises so they can share their stories, learn from one another, and develop practices that will sustain the family enterprise for generations. Other conferences include Private Company Governance Summit, Family Business Generational Wealth, and Character of the Corporation.

As a past lecturer in Family Business at Stetson University for over thirteen years, Peter helped hundreds of college-aged students establish a strong knowledge and skill set to successfully navigate the complex world of family enterprises. Classes included “Managerial Issues in Family Business: Harnessing the Strategic Value of Family” and “Personal and Professional Leadership Development in the Family Business.” As a consultant Peter works directly with family enterprises on family governance, leadership succession, family dynamics, and next-gen development. Each engagement is tailored to the needs of the family and often includes multiple approaches such as strategic planning, meeting facilitation, multistep consultations, and custom workshops.

Jane Flanagan has spent her career working with and learning from family leaders and family office executives. She has interviewed hundreds of families to document best practices, ranging from family communication and strategies for engaging the rising generation to family office service delivery and compensation. She has helped families decide whether it makes sense to have a family office and has consulted with others to evaluate and streamline existing operations. As Director of Family Office Consulting at Northern Trust, she partners with an experienced team of subject matter experts to educate families about their options and help them find their best way forward. Prior to joining Northern Trust in 2019, Jane was a managing director with Family Office Exchange for 26 years.

James Grubman, PhD, is a consultant to multigenerational families and their advisors about the issues that arise around wealth. He helps families establish healthy patterns of communication, governance, estate planning, and parenting for succeeding generations. He is the author of the renowned book Strangers in Paradise: How Families Adapt to Wealth Across Generations, and co-author (with Dennis T. Jaffe) of Cross Cultures: How Global Families Navigate Change Across Generations. He has been published and quoted extensively by the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, CNBC, and other media, including Malcolm Gladwell's 2013 book, David and Goliath. Jim holds Fellow status in the Family Firm Institute and the Purposeful Planning Institute, and he is one of only a handful of psychologists in the 20,000-member STEP organization. His global consulting practice, Family Wealth Consulting, is based in Massachusetts.

Charlotte E. Lamp, PhD, is a family business principal and consultant with Rockwood consulting. She is a third-generation shareholder of Port Blakely Companies and fellow of the Family Firm Institute. Presently, she is serving a fourth term on her family's council, providing expertise in governance and education. In addition, she consults with individual business families and provides captivating conference presentations.

Isabelle Lescent-Giles, PhD, is Professor of Strategy and Family Business at Hult International Business School, San Francisco campus. Her research, consulting practice, and teaching focus on helping current and future leaders of large family businesses adapt, innovate, and launch new business ventures, building upon their unique set of skills, values, history, and social capital.

She started her career in consulting at McKinsey. She continued to work closely with industry leaders, most notably as part of the IHEE think-tank on French competitiveness, and as a working group leader and researcher for the Conference Board in New York. Since 2005, she has worked as a senior consultant for the Winthrop Group, a boutique consulting firm that advises CEOs and top managers on transitions, change management, and strategic decision-making, using historical narratives to frame, define, and communicate change. She has taught at Oxford University, the Sorbonne, NYU's Stern School of Business, and the University of San Francisco. She has a PhD in economic history from the University of Paris–Sorbonne and is an alumni of France's Ecole Normale Supérieure (Ulm-Sèvres) and the Institut Universitaire de France. Joshua Nacht, PhD, is a consultant with the Family Business Consulting Group and works with multigenerational business families to leverage their strengths by focusing on effective governance, communication, and transitions. In 2015, Joshua earned a PhD in Organizational Systems, and his doctoral research, “The Role of the Family Champion,” won the Best Dissertation Award from the Family Firm Institute in 2016. His co-authored book Family Champions and Champion Families explores the value of family leaders in creating enduring business family success. Susan Massenzio, PhD, is co-president of Wise Counsel Research. She is a psychologist with extensive experience consulting to senior executives and leadership teams of Fortune 500 financial services firms. Susan is co-author of Cycle of the Gift, Voice of the Rising Generation, and Complete Family Wealth (all published by Wiley). She formerly served as a senior vice president at Wells Fargo and at John Hancock, and a professor and program director at Northeastern University. Susan holds a BA in Sociology from Simmons College and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Northwestern University.

Jamie Traeger-Muney, PhD, is the founder of the Wealth Legacy Group. She specializes in the emotional impact of wealth on inheritors, women, and multigenerational families. She works with her clients to concretize their values, develop a vision for their future, and create sound governance structures. She has revolutionized the conversation of wealth and worth by providing an opportunity to openly discuss the roles money plays in their lives, enabling them to be passionately engaged in the world and to lead a rich life. Jamie's personal experience as a second-generation owner of a family business and board member of her family foundation, combined with her theoretical and practical expertise in wealth psychology, has given her a unique sensitivity to issues surrounding the intergenerational family dynamics of affluence.

Keith Whitaker, PhD, is co-president of Wise Counsel Research. He has consulted for many years with leaders of enterprising families and is co-author of Cycle of the Gift, Voice of the Rising Generation, Family Trusts, Complete Family Wealth, and Wealth of Wisdom: The Top 50 Questions Wealthy Families Ask (all published by Wiley), in addition to many articles and reviews. Keith formerly served as a managing director at Wells Fargo and an adjunct assistant professor of philosophy at Boston College. He holds a BA in Classics and Philosophy from Boston University and a PhD in Social Thought from the University of Chicago. Family Wealth Report named Keith the 2015 “outstanding contributor to wealth management thought-leadership.”
