James Flaherty founded New Ventures West (1986) and Integral Leadership LLC (2004) to bring a rigorous, compassionate, and pragmatic method for supporting human development to individuals and organizations. Consequently, his work draws upon a wide range of traditions, especially twentieth-century philosophy (Heidegger Searle, Flores, Wittgenstein, James, Rorty, etc.), somatics (e.g., Heckler and Caldwell), cognitive science (e.g., Damasio), integral studies (Ken Wilber et al.), spirituality (e.g., Zen, Christianity, Judaism, and Sufism), and developmental theory (Loevinger, Gilligan, Graves, Kegan, Fowles, etc.), among many others. The focus of the work is always to foster development so that competence and fulfillment improve, suffering lessens, and joy and freedom expand for everyone involved in the process.
