Standing in an area once occupied by a botanical garden and later by the capital’s first railway station, the Capitol is a loose imitation of that in Washington, DC, but is even taller – the dome was the highest point in the city until the 1950s. During Machado’s rule, the building witnessed many major historic events and, after the revolution it became the headquarters of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment.
