  1. Hôtel des Grandes Écoles

A secret hideaway in a lovely part of Paris, the two buildings that make up this 51-room hotel are set around a garden. The rooms are attractively decorated and the location is perfect as a base for exploring the Latin Quarter.

  2. Hôtel Lenox Montparnasse

The flower-filled Lenox is close to Montparnasse cemetery. The rooms are clean, with modern facilities. Some are on the small side so ask for a larger room if you don’t like being too cramped: there is also a top-floor suite.

  3. Hôtel Saint-André-des-Arts

This charmingly modest hotel offers ancient exposed beams and a Left Bank location at bargain prices. The rooms are tiny, but for a cheap bolt-hole and truly Parisian Bohemian feel, it can’t be beaten.

  4. Hôtel Amour

Situated just below Montmartre, this extremely trendy, vintage hotel and bistro has medium-sized rooms decorated with cutting edge photography and pop art (bare bottoms and more much are in evidence). As it is on a quiet residential street, guests can experience Parisian Bohemia without the usual crowds.

  5. Grand Hôtel Lévêque

The only thing grand about this hotel is its name, but it remains a favourite for budget accommodation in Paris. Almost all rooms have fans, phone, TV, hairdryer and even a modem socket.

  6. Hôtel de Lille

If you want a cheap central hotel, they come no cheaper nor more central than the Lille, just a minute’s walk from the Louvre. The decor of the guest rooms is fairly unexciting, but breakfast is served in an atmospheric, stone-vaulted room. There is no elevator.

  7. Le Caulaincourt Square Hôtel

Part budget hotel, part hostel, with a friendly atmosphere and access to the sights of Montmartre.

  8. Hôtel Plessis

Delightful hotel in an untouristed area of Paris. Rooms are compact, minimalistic and chic. Fifth-floor rooms have balconies; all have TV and phone.

  9. Hôtel du Globe

Set in a 17th-century building near the Jardin du Luxembourg. This 15-room hotel offers friendly, personal service.

  10. Ermitage Hôtel

A wonderful family-run hotel in Montmartre. Some rooms have views over the city, others overlook a garden, and the furniture is antique or retro.
