SUMMARY

The OSGi specification provides a common foundation for ISPs, network operators, and equipment manufacturers to deliver a wide range of e-services via gateway servers running in the home or remote office. The OSGi specifications are designed to complement emerging standards in local device connectivity and in WAN access. OSGi is compatible with physical local transports such as Bluetooth, the HAVi standard, HomePNA, HomeRF, and USB. The device access architecture of OSGi is compatible with several different logical device access technologies, such as Jini and UPnP. From a technical perspective, OSGi is best described as a collection of APIs that define standards for service gateways. Where possible, the OSGi is leveraging existing Java standards, such as Jini. Where there are standards that apply that are not Java-based, the group work focuses on integrating with these standards. The services gateway uses JES to connect the Internet to devices on a home network. JES software is 100% Java technology.
