Focus on Key Result Areas

Know why you’re on the payroll. Identify the key result areas of your work. Know that your weakest key result area is the one holding you back. Don’t justify, rationalize, or defend your weaknesses. Identify them clearly and work to improve. Just think! You may be only one critical skill away from top performance.

NOTES

1. The starting point of high performance is identifying your key result areas—those things for which you are entirely responsible, that are wholly under your control, and that, when completed, impact the work of others. Take a minute to write down your five to seven key result areas.

2. A lot of the time, poor performance drives procrastination. People avoid the jobs where they’ve struggled in the past. So, what’s making you procrastinate? Which of your key result areas is your weakest? Take a minute to look back at your key result areas. Grade each of them on a 1–10 scale, with 10 being your greatest strength.
