INTERVIEWING REMOTELY / 81
of organizations are
incorporating new
virtual technology
to interview candidates
3. Prepare
For a professional interview,
test everything—your camera,
microphone, and Wi-Fi—and
make sure you have a charger
on hand.
4. Have a backup plan
This could be as simple as
switching to a phone interview.
If something goes wrong, take
control of the situation and
initiate your contingency plan,
even if that means rescheduling.
5. Limit distractions
Find somewhere that’s quiet
and private for the duration of
the interview. Tell colleagues
and family members you’ll be
occupied for that length of time.
7. Watch and listen
Pay extra attention to body
language, tone of voice, and
engagement. It can be easy to
forget that it’s a live interview
when you’re watching a screen.
6. Look professional
Dress as if you were conducting
an in-person interview and try
to find a neutral, professional
location. If you can’t, many
video-call platforms oer
virtual oce backgrounds.
8. Give them space
Keep your microphone on mute when
you’re not speaking and leave a second
or two before responding. Video calls can
sometimes suer a lag and talking over
one another is frustrating.
