High frequency

The high frequency band sits between 3 MHz and 30 MHz with wavelengths of 100 m and 10 m respectively. A prominent application using the HF range is CB, or Citizen's Band, a radio that operates with 40 channels near the 27 MHz frequency. The popularity of CB radio peaked in the late 1970s to the early 1980s in what could be described as a pre-internet version of chat room talk:

Many users of CB radio take advantage of a phenomenon known as skip to achieve long-distance communications with their transceivers. Skip occurs when radio signals skip off of the ionosphere, a layer of the upper atmosphere that is electrically charged, to locations great distances away. The distance covered with this method depends on things, such as the time of day and solar flare activity on the sun.
