68 9. THE ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS
about hybrid automobiles, has the vehicle been designed to reduce the emissions of CO

. Such
a design is considered a beneficial and a good design. But we must also then do a more thorough
analysis to determine if the energy source used creates other harmful effects, e.g., greater use of
water, or CO

emissions from the electrical power plants used to charge the vehicle.
9.2 SUMMARY
In summary, in this chapter we have merged our approach to what we believe will lead to more
Just Technology within the traditional engineering design process. Our questions that form the
basis for our goal of developing more just technology naturally broaden and deepen the existing
design process—a process that is the core of engineering practice. By weaving the two approaches
together it should be easier for engineers to adopt our ideas within this existing design practice.
e essence of what we have suggested is to supplement, not replace what we know and do best:
design what has never been.
