When selecting objects in real life, you normally aren't going to have the luxury of having a rectangular or circular selection to make. For selecting objects that don't have a shape that would fit into the marquee tools, the lasso tool might be the best choice. There are two lasso tools, namely the Lasso tool and the Polygonal Lasso tool.
- The Lasso tool: Let's start with the Lasso tool and walk through how to best use this selection tool. First you can go to the Lasso tool with the keyboard shortcut L. The Lasso tool is the most helpful selection tool when making a free-form selection. Just click-and-drag your mouse around the image to make any type of free-form selection. If you get a little off the line that you are trying to select, don't worry; keep finishing the selection and then use the Add to or Subtract from tools we talked about previously to refine your selection.
- The Polygonal Lasso tool: This tool doesn't give you the total flexibility that the normal Lasso tool gives you, but it will still allow you to select items that have straight lines. Let's take this image of a building as an example. With the Polygonal Lasso tool, it's really quick and easy to select the building if we wanted to change out the sky. Just start at one point and click to set the starting point of your selection. Then start to move around the edge of the item; the tool draws a straight line, so every time you need to alter the direction of the selection, just click to set another point and continue along the edge. Once you are done you can go back to the starting point and click to finish the selection or double-click your mouse to finish.
In the following screenshot, you can see that by using the Polygonal Lasso tool you can make a selection on an image with many straight lines. This is a very quick way to make a selection when you mainly have straight lines on an image:
