DR. DUINO
EXPLORER KIT
$159 drduino.com/make
With sensors, speakers, pushbuttons,
potentiometers, switches, lights, displays,
BLE, and more, the Explorer Kit from
Dr. Duino might be the ultimate Arduino
shield. Like many kitchen-sink kits, this
comes as a packet of raw components
encompassing almost every add-on you’d
want. Where it differs, however, is its large
PCB, measuring 6"×3¼", which allows
you to mount all the components, along
with an Arduino Nano (included) or Uno
(not included), and gives you convenient
access to them all when working on a
sketch in the Arduino IDE. Spend a couple
hours exercising your soldering skills as
you follow the online assembly guide to
put everything together, then dig into the
website project examples to build some fun
and educational projects. Then, anytime
inspiration strikes, you’ve got almost any
combination of components ready to test
out. —Mike Senese

SPEEDBALL DELUXE
BLOCK PRINTING KIT
$43 amzn.to/2SaxBsJ
Getting started in any new art medium
can be daunting as there are so many
materials and tools needed. This kit from
Speedball really does well in supplying not
only the bare necessities, but also some
nice variations to explore. Having never
done linocut or block printing, I didn’t know
what materials I’d like or tools I’d find
useful. After a single day with this kit I’m
well on my way to building out exactly what
I want with confidence.
The only thing missing from the kit was
paper, and I have to say it would have been
nice to have a few different compositions of
paper to learn how they affected the prints.

You’re working on a project. You grab the
super glue bottle, but can’t twist the cap
off. You wrench it loose with pliers, but
nothing comes out. You jam a thumbtack
in the nozzle in hopes of finding a still-
liquid reservoir, but it’s too late —the glue
has all solidified. You throw it in the trash.
After repeating this frustration many
times, I spotted these 0.01oz packets at
the dollar store. I’ve successfully reused
them, and if one goes bad I’ve got more in
my drawer for a few cents each. Even at
online prices, they’re a better value than
all those wasted bottles. —Mike Senese
