lip-loving lipstick
This is my favorite lipstick because it glides on so smoothly. I use Joy Wax instead of beeswax in
the recipe. If you’d rather use beeswax, you can. It works well, too. Makes 2 ounces (56.7 grams),
or 12 lipsticks in (.15-ounce; 4.3-gram) lip balm tubes or 12 lipsticks from a mold.
.4 oz. (11.3g) candelilla wax
.1 oz. (2.8g) ozokerite wax
.05 oz. (1.4g) lanolin alcohol
1 oz. (28.4g) castor oil
.7 oz. (19.8g) sweet almond oil
.5 oz. (14.2g) fractionated coconut oil
.5 oz. (14.2g) lanolin
.2 oz. (5.7g) vitamin E
.15 oz. (4.3g) shea butter
.2 to .4 oz. (5.7 to 11.3g) your choice color
grind
Preservative (manufacturer’s
recommendation)
1. Place a small cup or bowl on the scale, and push the tare
button to zero out the weight of the container. Weigh
each of the waxes, pushing the tare button each time to
zero out the weight of the container. Transfer each wax
to a small saucepan or microwavable container. Melt
them over low heat or in the microwave on half power
in 1-minute intervals.
2. Weigh your oils, lanolin, vitamin E, and butter. Add
them to the waxes, and slowly melt the butter.
3. Just before all the butter has melted, remove the
saucepan from heat, and stir the butter until it’s
completely melted. Be careful not to overheat the
waxes and oils for the lipsticks. Overheating will give
the lipstick a gritty feel.
4. Weigh your color grind and preservative, and add them
to the mixture. Stir until all the color is incorporated.
5. Pour mixture into mold or tubes. Remelt if necessary
until all your tubes or molds are full.
6. Let the lipstick harden in the refrigerator for 2 hours. If
you used lip balm tubes, cut the top of the lipstick at a
slant.
