The markings divide the circle
into 360°. For a wheg with
three legs, each leg will be 1/3
of the way around the circle,
or 120°. Drag the curved
arrow around the dial until
the second leg gets to the
120-degree mark (Figure
L
).
For the third leg, just click
the “Duplicate and Repeat”
button again. The third leg
will automatically appear at
the correct angle.
5. To make the hub of the wheg,
start with the extra transparent
wheel cylinders you created
along with the copies of the leg:
First, click on the wheel
and drag the extra cylinders
to other parts of the
Workplane
(Figure
M
).
Make one cylinder
15mm by 15mm.
Give it a regular color by
un-clicking “Transparent”
and choosing whatever
color you like.
Make the second cylinder
3mm by 3mm. Instead of
a color, click on “Hole”
to use as the center of
the wheg
(Figure
N
)
.
Leave both cylinders for now.

6. To connect the legs:
Click on the original wheel cylinder to open its pop-up
window. To hide it for now, click on the little lightbulb
button in the pop-up window
(Figure

.
Just the three legs are left. Select them all and group
them to make them into one big shape

7. To finish the hub:
Bring the original wheel back by clicking the lightbulb at the top of
the screen.
Select just the three-legged shape by selecting the whole wheel, then
shift clicking it to de-select it. Hide the legs using the lightbulb button
on the pop-up.
Select the two hub cylinders and the wheel cylinder. Align them all to
the center of the wheel, clicking on both the guide at the bottom and
the guide at the side of the
wheel

GO BEYOND
Tinkercad designs are cool on their own. But they can also be transformed
into real-life plastic or cardboard models using rapid prototyping machines.
Suggestions include:
Export your design as a file to use with a 3D printer or a laser cutter.
Switch the worktable to the orthographic (flat) view. Take a screenshot

of your project, then convert the image to a PDF that you can use with
a desktop cutting machine, or print it out on cardstock and cut it out by
hand.
To test your whegs, attach them to a bare-bones platform. Make axles
out of bamboo skewers — the skewers fit the hole in the wheg. They
can be inserted through the “tunnels” in a piece of corrugated plastic
or cardboard. Or use a pencil as an axle and insert it through an extra-
wide drinking straw attachedto the test body. To test the mini wheg go-
cart, let it roll down a tilted surface, pull it with a string, or add a motor.
TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
If you’ve built real whegs but they don’t work, take a look at:
The legs: Are all the legs the same length?
The hub: Is the hole for the axle or other connection in the exact
middle?
The feet: Are they blocking the wheg from rolling? Try making them
shorter, or point the toes up a bit more. Do they slip on slick surfaces?
Add some tape (sticky side out) or some rubbery craft foam to the
bottom of the feet, like the soles on sneakers.
