Coexistence with Other Microsoft Server Products

It is important to understand which other Microsoft server products that Windows SharePoint Services and SharePoint Portal Server 2003 can coexist with. An article covering this topic with additional information can be found at the following URL: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011607771033.aspx

Table 6.2 provides a summary:

NOTE

Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services can coexist on the same server computer, but Exchange Server 2003 and SharePoint Portal Server 2003 cannot. Some specific configuration steps are required in Windows SharePoint Services if it is to coexist with Exchange Server 2003 on the same server to ensure that Exchange Server can handle its own HTTP and HTTPS requests, rather than having those requests intercepted by Windows SharePoint Services.

Chapter 16, “Securing Remote Access to SharePoint 2003 with ISA Server 2004,” provides additional discussions of leveraging ISA Server 2004's capabilities to protect the SharePoint 2003 environment.

Part of the planning and design process should include discussions about whether SharePoint and any of these products should coexist on one server or whether they should be separated on different physical servers. A testing process should then be used to validate that the performance meets the organization's requirements before proceeding with a production implementation.
