Adding a new Redash Data Source

To add a new Data Source, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the settings icon in the top-right header:
  1. On the settings page, under the Data Sources tab, click on the + New Data Source button:
  1. Select the desired Data Source from the displayed list, or start typing the Data Source name in the text box to filter the supported Data Sources list, and then select your Data Source from the narrowed list (in the following screenshot, we started typing sql, and you can see the filtered Data Sources that match the sql substring in regards to their names):
  1. Fill in the necessary information about your Data Source.

All Data Sources can be used on a hosted Redash and a self-hosted Redash, except for Python (still in beta) Data Sources, which can only be used on a self-hosted Redash.

When using a hosted Redash, most of the time the traffic is firewalled, so you have to verify that the Redash server actually can connect to the Data Source (on the specific port of that Data Source; it's usually a simple rule in the firewall).

When possible, it is highly recommended to use a user with read-only permissions on the Data Source (the user that we use to let Redash connect to the Data Source).
Don't forget to use the Test Connection button when creating the Data Source, as this saves a lot of time afterwards.

As explained previously, Redash supports many Data Sources. In this chapter, we will focus on PostgreSQL , ElasticSearch, MongoDB, GoogleSpreadsheet, Query Results (Beta), URL, Amazon Athena, BigQuery, Redshift, and DynamoDB (with DQL).
