Appendix A

Smart City Strategies

The following examples of smart city strategies are a collection of relatively random choices, selected to represent almost every area of the world. After all, the smart city movement is global. You’ll see that I’ve grouped the cities by region for convenience. You may find the list and its content fascinating, but hopefully also quite valuable in understanding both the similarities and diversity of smart city focus areas for cities. These areas and approaches aren’t comprehensive in my summaries, and I apologize to each city in advance for any glaring omissions or errors. The items chosen were those that jumped out in the research on each city and were worth sharing simply for the purpose of illustrating the type of work being done. I encourage you to scan the list, and also to follow the website links and explore some of the city’s strategies more deeply. My hope is that this list serves as not just a learning exercise but also an opportunity to be inspired and driven to action.

Note: Not every city had a dedicated smart city microsite, so I’ve done my best to link to a relevant page.
