Chapter 12. Setting Up Printing Services

Sun recommends that you use the Solaris Print Manager, now available in the Solaris Operating Environment to set up printing on systems running the Solaris Operating Environment.

This chapter describes how to set up network printing services with the Solaris Print Manager. The Solaris Print Manager issues the necessary SAF commands.

In the past, the term network printer was used to describe printers that were directly attached to a Sun print server. These printers were accessed over the network. In this book, the term network printer means a printer with an internal network card that has its own IP address and is directly connected to the network.

You can connect printers to a network in the following ways, also illustrated in Figure 44.

  • Connect a local printer to a user's system.

  • Connect one or more printers to a print server.

  • Connect a network printer directly to the network.

Figure 44. Three Ways to Connect Printers to a Network

The network at your site may comprise many systems. A system that has the printer connected to it and makes the printer available to other systems is called a print server. Print servers also provide access to network printers. A system that has its printing needs met by a print server is called a print client. You need to decide which systems to designate as print servers with printers directly cabled to them, which systems to designate as print servers for network printers, and which systems to designate as print clients.

You perform the following basic tasks to set up printing services.

  • Setting up local printers.

  • Setting up network printers.

  • Setting up print servers.

  • Setting up print clients.
