Part 2
Getting Started
I once attended a conference where an articulate, dedicated, and forthright gentleman spoke about how he and his cohorts had worked valiantly to get the attention of senior managers and teach them about knowledge management and its importance to their firm. He then admitted ruefully that they had succeeded too well, too fast. Management told them to go ahead and implement. But they hadn’t thought through what strategies they should recommend or what sort of supporting infrastructure it would take to implement their plan.

He implored all of us to think about what we would do when we got what we wished for: the go-ahead to implement knowledge management. His advice in short was: Be ready.

Crafting a strategy involves asking tough questions, considering a lot of issues, and applying a considerable amount of creativity. We’ll look at this in this section, as well as getting started with a pilot to try out your wings. Lastly, we’ll look at some approaches you might want to use.
