Part 6
Settling In for the Long Haul
My parents like to tell a story about the birth of one grandchild. Part one of their story centers on the prospective father. Worn down by the months of problems associated with a difficult pregnancy dictating bed rest, he said earnestly to my parents, “I sure will be glad when the baby’s born and we can get back to normal.” (The mother didn’t like it much, either.)

Part two is the day that they came home with the baby. Until that day the father retained his hope of a return to normalcy. However, after arriving home with their newborn, he and the new mother sat on their couch, looked at each other, and asked in complete bewilderment, “What do we do now?” The darned thing had come without an instruction manual.

You may feel like that after you conduct your knowledge management pilot. In this part we’ll focus on what happens after the pilot baby has been brought home: the next steps after you implement your knowledge management approach, and how to avoid some common pitfalls. We’ll also switch from concentrating on knowledge management for organizations to include a chapter looking at knowledge management for individuals.
