Design a Department Retreat

DESIGNING A MEANINGFUL RETREAT may seem fairly straightforward at first blush, but in actuality, the process is quite complex for a number of reasons. First, designing a curriculum that is aligned with the strategic goals of the department requires a higher level of knowledge about its inner workings. To design a process of goal setting, goal tracking, and accountability, the facilitator must have a solid mastery of curriculum development and design, facilitation, project management, goal setting, and presentation skills. Likewise, a system for continuous and ongoing monitoring of the goals developed is essential.

Another challenge is that, oftentimes, people do not look forward to attending these types of events. Why? Well, we are quite confident you have been captive to an event that you knew would a) not lead to anything long term, and/or b) was not an enjoyable use of your time. So designing a retreat that is both productive and enjoyable is no small challenge.

Another aspect of this tip is the actual facilitation of the event. As the person responsible for the content and delivery, influencing the team to be involved and engaged is an essential skill for an emerging leader. Facilitation differs from presentation in that the objective is not necessarily to share what you know but the art of capturing and mining what those around you know or want.

Of course, you will need to provide continuous and ongoing support to ensure a successful event, and as team members learn and grow, they will get better and better at curriculum development and design, facilitation, and follow-through.
