With such sayings we suggest, that people are strongly influenced by their surroundings.
And they are. In fact, the cultures and civilizations in which we grow up equip us with thousands of ideas and memes from the earliest age, many of which are extremely difficult to change later in life. It is as if they are hard-wired into our brains - often unconsciously. “Fish do not see the water they swim in,” says another proverb. So what effect has Western ideas and Western creativity had on its people? Did it make them better individuals or worse? More peaceful or aggressive? Did it create cultures that were particularly effective? Might it even have changed our genes?
