to mind while listening to other
presenters. Looking at movies
within a “dancing with entropy”
model (Kearns and O’Connor,
2004)suggests that the movie it-
self is only a part of the “cinema”
experience. e end of cinema
has been predicted frequently in
the past—introduction of sound
would kill the visual art; intro-
duction of color would do the
same; television would take peo-
ple away from the theater. Even if cinema means large gatherings in front of large screens, the death
notice is premature. If home viewing of productions such as Breaking Bad and Game of rones is
any indication, smaller groups watching at home can still interact with others over social media in
a distributed cinema.
3.6.9 EVOLUTION OF CINEMA
Evolution might be a more useful
term than end of cinema. Birds
embody the genetic material of
dinosaurs; Homosapiens sapiens
hold onto Neanderthal genetic
material; Catullus’ “odi et amo”
holds Vergil’s Latin poetry ge-
netic material.
A ought
e movie is only part of the cinema experience. If we say
“cinema” is to “end,” then we are saying that the experience of
cinema has no value to the viewer.
