SUMMARY

Digital signal processors (DSPs) are the engines for voice coders and modems, and an important variable in the VoIP equation. They rely now on Harvard architectures, very compact code, FFT, and other advanced techniques. It is reasonable to say that the new generalized processors (the Pentiums, etc.) will be of sufficient horsepower to compete with DSPs. This may be so, but the generalized processors will likely be tied up with other operations. So, it seems reasonable to say that DSPs and the new chips will both reside in the end-user PC.
