Giving back is good for WordPress and good for you. As you become more involved with WordPress, you’ll learn that it’s more than just software—it’s a community. The biggest mistake you could make is regarding this community as an optional feature. Giving back doesn’t just make you feel good—it’s a great way to become known as an expert. Releasing a free plugin or theme can take time away from client work, but it can also yield leads for years to come. I had an idea for a plugin one night. It took about four hours to code it and release it. Within weeks, it led directly to a new client. I wouldn’t have gotten that client if I hadn’t given back.

Have you encountered a difficult problem in WordPress and solved it? Share your solution in a blog post! Someone else is having that same issue, and when he finds your post, he’ll think of you the next time he runs into trouble. New clients won’t ask to see a sample of your work, and you’ll spend less time convincing people that you know what you’re talking about. We learn best by doing. Sharing your knowledge and the fruits of your labor is a really powerful way to advertise your skills.

Getting involved with the WordPress community will also give you access to a professional support network. These are people who can give you valuable advice, save you time and effort, and help you find new opportunities. Go to a local WordPress meetup or a WordCamp event. Meet other people who make things with WordPress. Stay in touch with them.

Get involved. Show your work. Give back. Share knowledge. Connect. And have fun!
