Purpose: To give participants a more active role in review sessions.

 Time Required: 10 to 15 minutes.

 Size of Group: Unlimited.

 Materials Required: Writing materials for everyone; a small hat or basket.

 The Exercise in Action: Aline Hurst, a training officer at First Security Bank of Idaho, Boise, has participants create as well as answer a variety of review questions by asking them to write review questions every so often and drop them in a hat or basket she brings around the room.

Hurst also places some of her own questions in the hat, usually not related to course content and more personal in nature, such as “What is the accomplishment you are most proud of?”

Throughout the session, Hurst passes the hat and asks participants to pull out and answer a question. Because participants don’t know what kind of questions they’ll get, it forces them to pay a little closer attention in class. And Hurst says the technique “keeps things more interesting while reinforcing concepts.”
