Preface

Throughout our academic career, we came across a number of less celebrated Indian companies, who had been performing excellently. After further probing, we concluded that these companies, which had a humble beginning, had grown into large corporations in a short period of time. Moreover, they were using a variety of innovative strategies to grow and develop in the extremely competitive Indian and international markets. This encouraged us to write a book which would detail everything about those companies. We also took into account the fact that in India, we have a shortage of Indian case studies. Most of the available case studies are either written by western authors or are outdated. Our aim is to give readers an updated account of some exclusive Indian companies and the impact of their corporate strategies in the respective sectors.

Initially, our list included about 25–30 companies, but after necessary screening, we shortlisted 10 companies. These companies are not from any particular industry but cover a wide spectrum of Indian Industry, which are as follows:

  1. Steel (JSW Steel)
  2. Pharmaceuticals (Glenmark Pharma)
  3. Alternate Energy (Suzlon)
  4. Information Technology (Mastek)
  5. Fast Moving Consumer Goods (Emami Limited and Marico Limited)
  6. Packaging (Essel Propack)
  7. Sugar (Renuka Sugars)
  8. Cut Flower Industry (Karuturi)
  9. Food and Beverage Industry (Rasna)

While doing our own research of these companies, we decided to put forth a collection of interviews of their top executives. This, we felt, would add significant value to this book as compared to the similar books written on this subject. Expectedly, all the CEOs responded positively and a collage of interviews comprising (each being almost an hour long session) was created. We are very grateful to the said companies and their CEOs, for cooperating with us in this endeavour. The readers can access the interviews in the DVD which has been provided along with this book. Earlier Indian managers would learn from case studies of multinational companies. But today, Indian companies serve as role models to managers all over the world.

We hope that our book will appeal to any reader like MBA students, academicians or any professional. We hope our effort will enlighten our audiences and make an impactful contribution to the field of management.
