Foxglove

Foxgloves are tall, erect, biennial plants. Their flowers are long and tubular with white, yellow, rose, or purple flowers that usually contain a dotted pattern on the inside. Use the diagrams in this section to block in each flower connected to a long, draping stem.

Dried foxglove leaves are used to make the heart medicine digitalis.

Don’t begin shading until all flowers are in place, because some flowers cast shadows on others. Follow steps A through C on the bottom three flowers for shading. Start with tiny circles to create the dot pattern inside the flower, then slowly shade around them. For the outside of the flowers, use the flat side of an HB pencil, applying crosshatching lines around the edges to give the blossoms a three-dimensional appearance.
