Introduction

The challenges enterprises face in a hyperconnected, highly dynamic, and technology-pervaded world require them to think holistically about their relationships to people. The design competency can help enterprises to consciously shape the way they are experienced over time, to provide a face visible and approachable to everyone interacting with them.

To tackle problems on this level, the practice of design needs to become more strategic and relevant to problem settings typical to the enterprise. This section portrays the Enterprise Design framework as an overarching design approach to address the diverse use contexts and business scenarios that can be used to facilitate enterprise-people interaction. It provides a common language that allows practitioners of different disciplines to converse about the problems and challenges of such a global design initiative.

Our framework is based on a blend of practice-oriented design approaches with roots in Systems Thinking, Design Thinking, and design practice, which we found to be particularly useful for interdisciplinary work in design projects on the enterprise level. It most likely contains many terms you already know, but also introduces some new ones. It attempts to bring these terms together as a way to design in large-scale, complex problem settings.
