In the late 18th century, before the museums and lavish hotels of East Madrid took shape, the Paseo del Prado was laid out and soon became a fashionable spot for strolling. Combine this original attraction with visits to the Paseo’s museums and art galleries to make the most of the area. Take a detour to visit the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Museo del Prado (just south of the Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo). You’ll pass grand monuments built under Carlos III along the route, including the Puerta de Alcalá, the Fuente de Neptuno and the Fuente de Cibeles. Surprisingly, they stand in the middle of busy roundabouts.
