Accidental Photojournalist
1862 TO 1939
Christina Broom never planned to become a photographer. She only took up photography at the age of 40 to support her family after her husband was injured and became unable to work. She taught herself how to use a camera and sold her photos as postcards. But soon, she discovered a true passion for the work and became a professional photojournalist. Broom became close with the British royal family, taking photos of the king and queen. Her best-known photographs are of the suffragettes and the early feminist movement.
