The Mission

So, what is it that everybody is trying to do with these wireless networks? That's a difficult thing to explain because each group has its own mission and purpose. A large number of people are simply excited about the possibilities that 802.11 has for widespread high-speed Internet access. After all, it's kind of cool that you can get a few parts from a store, build a Pringles^® can antenna, and share your Internet connection with your neighbor. There's something in the psychology of the human condition that encourages us to reach out to one another to communicate and share our experiences. Wireless Internet access is just one link in a long chain of this phenomenon. Computers themselves were originally just created as stand-alone devices used for business operations. Soon, networking was invented which allowed computers to talk to each other. 802.11 is just an enhanced form of this ability to reach out to one another and communicate.
