Summary

In this chapter, we reviewed options for setting up a Linux-based AP for use in a public hotspot. Since most hotspots are intended to encourage open use, they generally do not employ any security measures at all (such as WEP/WPA). We reviewed the HostAP Linux driver for Prism-based cards. This driver can be used in a special master mode to turn your wireless card into an AP. We also looked at the NoCat portal system. NoCat allows you to create a portal-based AP, so you can force users to authenticate and/or click OK on an Acceptable Use Policy Web page.

Next, we mentioned Embedded Linux options such as Pebble, M0n0wall, and LEAF/WISP-Dist. These work well if you need a highly reliable device in a small form factor with low power requirements. We also looked at some hardware options for these systems.

Finally, we reviewed how to configure HostAP on a LEAF/Bering system. By following the step-by-step instructions, you can turn your own PC into a Linux-based AP.
