Section 4

INNOVATIVE LANDSCAPING

The relationship between a home and its outdoor spaces is an indispensable part of residential design; however, this relationship is about to become even more critical as local and global environmental pressures mount. The need to consider natural features such as orientation, topography and flora and fauna when situating a dwelling, while also benefiting from the site’s architectural potential is regarded as a principal strategy for contemporary design.

Landscaping is not only about aesthetics; a garden also needs to be a place for residents to grow food and to spend leisure time. Gardens, however, can no longer be a burden on the environment. Xeriscaping can be used to help strike a balance between designing a functional garden and doing the utmost to conserve resources and the natural environment. Xeriscaping practices can reduce water consumption and the use of chemicals that are commonly used to keep lawns weed-free and green. These subjects will be discussed further in this section
