1.4. Test the Server

Before trying your own servlets or JSP pages, you should make sure that the server is installed and configured properly. For Tomcat, click on install_dir/bin/startup.bat (Windows) or execute install_dir/bin/startup.sh (Unix/Linux). For JRun, go to the Start menu and select Programs, JRun 3.1, and JRun Default Server. For ServletExec, click on install_dir/bin/StartSED40.bat. In all three cases, enter the URL http://localhost/ in your browser and make sure you get a regular Web page, not an error message saying that the page cannot be displayed or that the server cannot be found. Figures 1-3 through 1-5 show typical results. If you chose not to change the port number to 80 (see Section 1.3, “ Change the Port and Configure Other Server Settings ”), you will need to use a URL like http://localhost:8080/ that includes the port number.
