Deprecation of the nonCDB architecture

As described in detail throughout this book, Oracle GoldenGate 12c supports replication to and from multitenant databases that are key components in the cloud revolution. In the Oracle 12c Release 1 Database Upgrade Guide, Oracle has announced: "The non-CDB architecture is deprecated in Oracle Database 12c, and may be desupported and unavailable in a release after Oracle Database 12c Release 2. Oracle recommends use of the CDB architecture".

For clarity, the CDB architecture includes the following key components:

  • The container database (CDB): This is the type of database that is created when the database supports Oracle's multitenant option. The container database is also called the ROOT container.
  • The root container database (CDB$ROOT): This container is created automatically when you create a multitenant database. The root container contains the data dictionary for the CDB.
  • The pluggable database (PDB): These are the databases that are stored within the CDB.

    Tip

    Configuring more than one PDB will incur additional cost to your Oracle Standard and Enterprise license, which is required by the multitenant feature of the Oracle 12c database. However, creating a single tenant PDB will avoid the additional license cost.
