ASSIGNMENT 48

Creating Tension

ASSIGNMENT

Grab the viewer’s attention by going against the natural visual flow. For example, we normally leave room in the frame for our subject to move toward or into, and we avoid placing them at the edge of the frame. We make good use of leading lines and repeated patterns to lead the eyes toward the subject or focal point. Your assignment is to break some of these rules intentionally in order to create tension.

TECHNIQUE

It’s best to find the background first, visualize the scene that would break the visual flow and create tension, and then wait. Best not to settle for just anyone. Find a subject that fits the environment as much as possible. The goal is to make the strongest possible photograph. Remember that you are only in control of your gear and your vision; allow time for serendipity to do its part before you settle or move on.

Against the Flow / Paris, 2016

While the repeated patterns and leading lines are calling the main subject to continue walking down the corridor, he makes an unexpected exit that creates tension by breaking the visual flow.
