7.9. Summary

Although some developers focus on automated testing, many testers only focus on manual testing. The key is to have a mixture of both, each type covering what they are each best at. Automation is great at tasks which can be repeated and can be used when manually testing an application for more effective use of time. Manual testing is great at the hard to automate sections of the application which might be due to a complex UI or a complex procedure to reproduce the problem.

When creating manual tests the items discussed in Chapter 6 still apply, as do many of the automation techniques; however, manual testing introduces some new concepts such as exploratory testing and usability testing to ensure the application will be fit for purpose and usability and withstand any type of user interaction.
