THE ART OF FASHION ILLUSTRATION
Text
Now Get Sketching!
Aou’ve just discovered what makes some of the world’s top fashion illustrators unique.
Now you can try out the techniques they’ve described here to create your own works of
art using the fashion silhouettes printed on the high-quality, uncoated drawing paper
provided. They are perforated for easy removal. Aou might start with Danny Robert’s
blind contour style, in which you place your pen on the paper and look only at the subject,
drawing blindly. As artist Sarah Beetson said, this technique “can be totally haphazard
with moments of clarity, a mess of abstract lines with a perfect hand or eye within it”—so
if the technique doesnt give you the intended result, don’t be afraid to mix and match it
with other techniques until you Ånd a style that is truly your own.
Perhaps you’ll be inspired by Silja Götz to play with diٺerent materials to create a collage
within a traditional ink silhouette drawing, or by artist Aaeko Abe who draws in ink pen
before adding color with markers, all while staying loose and spontaneous. Once you’ve
developed a sketch you’re happy with, keep it in your personal archive like artist Lovisa
BurÅtt, who used to throw away her Ånished sketches, but now keeps the ones she’s happy
with to use as inspiration for future drawings.
Each of the artists in this book has one thing in common: They worked hard to achieve
their success; it didn’t happen overnight. Practice and perfect your style and make it your
own, because there is nothing more important than the individual point of view an artist
brings to a project.

For me illustration is a way
of exploring details. Since my
collections begin with fabric—
the texture, pattern, color, and
opulence—illustration gets
my ideas and silhouettes onto
paper; fine-tuning the details
and discovering new ones
from the slip of the hand.

Sketches are the soul of a
collection. It’s that special
magical moment in the
beginning when your pen
hits the paper and a small
idea unravels into a big
dream or a beautiful story.

An idea is just a dream
when trapped in your
head, but it becomes a
reality when you put it
down on paper.
