Part 3
Building a Collaborative Team
You’ve staffed your organization. Now comes the hard part: getting your employees to work. Sure, some of the men and women you hired have good experience in the type of work they’ll do in their new jobs, but others have little background and have to be brought up to snuff fast. Even the experienced people need training. They have to be assimilated into your company.

This starts with a good orientation to make newcomers feel comfortable in the new job; and it’s followed by training them in the actual work they’ll do.

Once they’re settled into the job, you still have lots to do to meld them into the groups or teams in which they’ll work. The best-managed companies recognize that to run a successful company requires a collaborative, cooperative workforce.

In these chapters you’ll see how to establish first-rate orientation, training, and development programs. You’ll also learn how to improve communications, whether they are downward, upward, lateral, or external—an essential ingredient to teamwork.
