Part 7
The End of the Line
Jobs are not forever. Sooner or later they come to an end. Some people gracefully retire; others leave voluntarily. However, often the separation from a job is involuntary—and sometimes traumatic. Business slows down and employees are laid off. A worker doesn’t meet performance standards and is let go. A troublesome employee is fired after going through progressive discipline—or in some instances on the spot.

Separation and termination present special challenges to managers. Losing employees—whether it’s their or your initiative—breaks up teams, upsets morale, requires reshuffling of the work, and if the worker is to be replaced, it brings the headache of hiring and training the replacement.

In this part of the book you’ll learn how to cope with both voluntary and involuntary separations. You’ll learn how to conduct a separation interview to find out why good people quit. You’ll learn about the laws that must be adhered to when you have mass layoffs. You’ll learn how to legally and tactfully fire somebody and how to protect your company from potential litigation.
