The Instructor Guide

The Instructor Guide consists of the same five parts as the Student Guide. However, the Instructor Guide has additional information to each of the parts.

When developing the Instructor Guide, start with a copy of the Student Guide and add the information below.

Table of Contents

In addition to a table of contents, generate a table of the units and their learning objectives. The instructor should be able to look in the beginning of the Guide and see all of the learning objectives.

Most word processors use paragraph styles to generate a table of contents. In a similar way, you can use paragraph styles to generate a table of learning objectives. Check the online help for your word processor under indexes and tables.

Introduction

The introduction contains all of the information that a student needs to decide whether to attend the course. You can copy and paste this information into your public announcement of the class.

Also, include login information for any accounts used in class. This includes the accounts for the instructor and the students, and any administrative accounts needed to set up the system.

Printouts of the Slides

For the Student Guide, you printed the slide show for each unit. You may have used your presentation application to print handouts with several slides per page and space reserved for taking notes.

Most presentation applications also enable you to include speaking notes for each slide. These notes are for the instructor only. They are printed when you select the Notes view of the slide show. Print the slides and speaking notes for the Instructor Guide. The students get printouts of the slides with space for taking notes, and the instructor gets a printout with speaking notes.

Directions for the In-class Exercises

In the Student Guide, you included directions for each in-class exercise after each slide show. When teaching each unit, the instructor will show the slides, then work through the demonstration, and then assign the in-class exercise.

For each unit, place the directions for the demonstration between the slide show and the exercise. This is the order in which each unit will be delivered: slide show, demo, student practice exercise.

Resources and Contacts

There is nothing you need to add to this section for the Instructor Guide. However, you may want to demonstrate some of the online resources available to the students.

Slide Show Files

What application did you use to create the slide show? Are you sure that the application is installed on the instructor’s computer? If so, you can just copy the files to the instructor’s computer.

If you’re not sure that the instructor’s computer will have the slide show software, export the slide show in a format that will work on any computer. For example, Microsoft PowerPoint has a Pack and Go function that will package the slide show player with a slide show. OpenOffice can export a slide show in a format that plays in a Web browser. Your slide show application may have a similar function.
