28 5. DESIGN–ANOTHER FORM OF DECISION MAKING
signers and design engineers should discuss more on the issue of decision making. It is a typical
action of creativity.
5.6 PATTERN APPROACH
Carole Bouchard, French professor at Arts et Metiers, ParisTech, is pursuing design creativity
from the standpoint of decision making, although they do not call their research as the one for
decision-making for design. eir research is very interesting.
Images play an important role in design. is is something on which everyone can agree.
However, images are not well organized for design. Researchers at Arts et Metiers, ParisTech
introduced patterns to organize them. Patterns are used often in image processing, but what is
unique with their research is that their aim is not to classify or identify images, but for decision
making. If we compare patterns, we know which part of the pattern still needs to be explored.
erefore, we can find a new direction.
Although they are not doing research in brain science right now, such pattern processing
may be what our brains are doing for decision making. It is expected that such a pattern-based
approach to creative design will be taken up in the field of brain science very soon. And it should
also be added AI will work effectively in such an approach.
e reason why Arts et Metiers, ParisTech introduced pattern-based approach may be
because it is originally an engineering school, not an art school. So, to them, such a pattern
approach may be more familiar than other approaches discussed in traditional art schools.
5.7 EFFECTIVENESS OF THE HYPOTHESIS-DRIVEN
APPROACH
In design or in engineering we have goals on our minds. But we should remember that we
cannot find our way by backward or goal-driven reasoning. Again, information in our real world
is incomplete and uncertain. erefore, we generate a hypothesis which seems to work and apply
it and study if it really works or not. If it works, then it is fine. It might not be the best (optimum)
solution, but regardless we can get to the goal. If it does not work, then we generate another
hypothesis. Repeat this cycle until we can get to the goal. So, in most cases, design or engineering
is an activity of trial and error, because they are creating a new world.
e reason why there werent any doubts about mathematical rationality is because our
world was closed and small. us, the problems these days were straightforwardly solved by
mathematical rationality.
In other words, art schools are focusing too much on tactics. Design is a strategic activity,
so we should re-consider creativity in design from the standpoint of strategy.
