Communication | Topical |
Purpose: To stimulate discussion on the importance of perspective.
Time Required: 20 minutes.
Size of Group: Unlimited.
Materials Required: Poster-sized blowups of unique photos, prepared in advance by the trainer.
The Exercise in Action: Calling his activity the “Power of Imagination,” Don Allison, national sales trainer for Hallmark Cards, Kansas City, uses photo blowups to illustrate how using unique ideas or techniques can make basic information more interesting.
The photos are taken at angles that make identifying the objects difficult. The objects are “blown up” larger than life, or show a closeup of only a small part of the subject. Allison’s blowups include a donut, a turtle shell, an alligator snout, a piece of grass sticking up out of the snow, a portion of hair on the back of someone’s head, and the closure at the top of a purse. Can you guess the example shown above? (The answer is listed below.)
He hangs 20 of the posters in the meeting room and asks participants to try to describe on an entry form what each poster is. The reward for getting the most correct answers is a dinner for two (you may choose some other appropriate reward).
