 Purpose: To help a trainer quickly assess the audience.

 Time Required: 5 minutes.

 Size of Group: Unlimited.

 Materials Required: None.

 The Exercise in Action: Bob Boser, a quality engineer with Eastman Kodak, Rochester, NY, asks participants to choose one of the following groups by asking the following:

“Are you…

1.   An Explorer? (learning the course material for the first time);

2.   A Vacationer? (have seen the material before); or

3.   A Prisoner? (forced to attend training).”

Boser says this question allows trainers to recognize expertise within the group (Vacationers) and gives those required to attend (Prisoners) a chance to release some of their frustrations before the session.
