A COMPUTATIONAL INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING
SECOND
EDITION
“This textbook does an excellent job covering the basics of image processing. I highly
recommend it.”
—Reza Malek-Madani, Professor of Mathematics, US Naval Academy
“This book is the most concise and readable introductory text on digital image processing
I have ever encountered. It provides a gentle introduction to the eld with little mathemat-
ics and plenty of examples. Each topic is clearly explained and can be practiced using
ready-made computer programs written in three programming languages (MATLAB
®
, Oc-
tave, and Python).”
—Mahamed G.H. Omran, PhD, Gulf University for Science & Technology (GUST)
A Computational Introduction to Digital Image Processing, Second Edition explores
the nature and use of digital images and shows you how they can be obtained, stored,
and displayed. Along with MATLAB, this second edition now includes GNU Octave and
Python. Programs are written as modular as possible, allowing for greater exibility, code
reuse, and conciseness. This edition also contains new images, redrawn diagrams, and
new discussions of edge-preserving blurring lters, ISODATA thresholding, Radon trans-
form, corner detection, retinex algorithm, LZW compression, and other topics.
Features
Uses both open-source and commercial software to provide a complete environment
for image processing that is easy to use, explain, and extend
Presents a discrete mathematics approach that links the calculus-based (continuous)
theory with its discrete implementation
Provides a strong connection between theory and practice, allowing you to develop
your own functions for implementing specic image processing algorithms
Incorporates many examples of images accompanied with commands in each of the
three software systems, enabling you to create the images from the text
